Klezmer band that is both saving old traditions in its music

March, 3 a press conference of the musical band “Nayekhovichi” with the organizers of its concert — the JDC, the Jewish Student Organization “Beit Hillel” and the concert agency Bopromo was held.

The concert of the group which took place in the Minsk night club “Reactor” gave a start to their European tour.

“Nayekhovichi” is a popular klezmer band that is both saving old traditions in its music and is developing all the time. During the interview participants of the group told: “We are constantly looking for something new, though we do not forget about the old. We are young and we like to experiment, to mix different music styles. We create rock, reggae, jazz style remakes of traditional Jewish melodies; our repertoire includes our own and folk Yiddish songs, classics of Russian variety, different Balkan, Romani tunes etc.”

It's not the first concert of the “crazy” klezmer guys in Minsk. And it's not surprising: such type of music has become an integral part of musical life not only in the Jewish community, but also all over Belarus. Klezmer artists are invited both to the Jewish music festivals supported by the JDC, and to the concerts of different bands. Everyone would find something special in Klezmer tunes. For elderly people it's a chance to listen to Yiddish songs from their childhood, for the youth it means becoming closer to the essence, the spirit of Jewishness. The JDC together with the Jewish Student Organization “Beit Hillel” is doing a great job on popularization and promotion of Jewish music among the young people of Belarus.

Named after Friedrich Engels, Karl Marx’s pal and accomplice in their abortive attempts to overthrow the reign of misappropriated surplus value, he still mourns the USSR and blames those who emigrate for a better living in Israel, in the USA or, even worse, in Germany.
