January 27 is designated as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
In 2012 the International Holocaust Remembrance Day is devoted to the theme "Children and the Holocaust" by decision of the United Nations. 1.5 million children, over a million of them Jewish, burned in the flames of the Holocaust.
During the war, thoughts about death were tormenting people constantly. Those days not only adults, but children were trying to find answers to questions of life. A poem "A small garden" by Franta Bass, a child prisoner in Terezin concentration camp, renders aching feeling of parting with life.
A little garden, Fragrant and full of roses. The path is narrow And a little boy walks along it. A little boy, a sweet boy, Like that growing blossom. When the blossom comes to bloom, The little boy will be no more.
By remembering children who perished in the Holocaust, we must ensure that other Holocausts do not happen and every child is protected.
A memorable event dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day will be held January 27 in Minsk by the UN Office in Belarus, Public Association Republican Fund "Holocaust” and the Union of Belarusian Jewish Associations and Communities.
Representatives of the UN in Belarus, the Ministry of Education, Religious and National Affairs Office of City Executive Committee, ghetto survivors, teachers and students of Belarusian schools in Minsk, Grodno, Brest and Vitebsk regions, who are actively engaged in Holocaust research in Belarus will speak at the event.
Vladimir Rubezhin, child Minsk ghetto survivor, legendary underground fighter and partisan, will share his memories of his Minsk ghetto experience. |
