Passover Project – Do Not Pass Over!

Print

alt The order of the traditional Seder meal remains the same throughout Jewish history and geography. The fact that it can not be changed fills the heart of any leader of the Seder with awe. This is also true about young participants of Passover project in Belarus that has been supported by the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta for four years. Young people put their hearts and souls into making 2 Seder meals for the clients of “Hesed-Rakhamim” Jewish Public Welfare Organization, 2 Seders for JFOS clients, a communal Seder in the Jewish community of Orsha, and Seders at Warm homes for hesed and JFOS clients meaningful and delightful.
Thanks to the project over 400 people got together at the festively laid tables. It was particularly moving to see people who were deprived of their heritage for the most of their lives experience an authentic Pesach Seder. These people did not know the feeling of unity at Passover table, could not openly taste matsa – the bread of affliction and Freedom.

Print

alt 4 years ago the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta launched Passover project in Minsk, its main aim being training of young Jewish people to lead Passover Seders in Jewish organizations.
It has become a tradition that Passover project starts off with Shabbaton bringing together young people from four Jewish organizations: JCC Emunah, Jewish Agency for Israel in Belarus, "Hillel" student organization and the Union of Progressive Judaism in Belarus. This year youngsters from Bobruisk, Mogilev, Vitebsk and Gomel could also take part in the Shabbaton supported by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in the Republic of Belarus.
Shabbaton is an excellent opportunity for young people to enhance knowledge on the history of Exodus, and the structure of the Haggadah, learn how to lead Seders for various age groups and exchange experience.

alt In 2012 Passover will begin on the sunset of the 6th of April and continue until the sunset of the 14th of April.
The holiday of Passover commemorates the liberation of the Children of Israel from slavery in ancient Egypt and celebrates freedom, both physical and spiritual. The Exodus became the starting point of formation of Jewish people as a nation that pledged to fulfill the commandments of the Torah.
It is traditional for Jewish families to gather on the first night of Passover to observe Seder which is a special family meal filled with ritual reminding us of the significance of the holiday. This year communal Passover seder meals will bring together over one thousand people on Minsk Jewish Campus and will be run youth leaders of Jewish organizations,..

alt “Brilliant!” Such was the unanimous appraisal of the audience of the 5th Republican Children Art Festival “Galaxy of Talents-2012” held on April, 1 in the Republican Veterans’ Palace of Culture in Minsk. The bright event attracted over 500 people, audience and performers. Children and parents came well before the beginning of the festival specially for the exciting entertainment offered for young guests of the event at the palace lobby: the children could exchange their tickets for sweets, sing and listen to the popular children songs, visit “kids’ tattoo studio” and play with clowns.
Every year the festival welcomes special guests who always come with a present – songs and dances prepared specially for the festival. Maya Lomakina

alt The life of Maya Lomakina is that of hard work and privation. Her story, however, is that of optimism and hope.
Having cared first for her younger sister when she was a young girl herself and then for her own severely ill husband for most of her life, at 65, with a “bunch” of chronic diseases like acute myocardial infarction,  high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and liver problems, Maya has nobody to take care of her. Her mother and sister made aliyah a long time ago, and her only daughter lives with her family 20 km away from Pinsk and can not visit Maya very often.

Mikhail Izrailsky (Belen’ky)

alt Volunteers are the heart and soul of any Jewish community. This is also true about Minsk Jewish Campus. It is hard to give an exact number of MJC volunteers, but some 800 people of different ages donating their time and effort to the community can proudly call themselves volunteers of MJC.
There are volunteers dedicated to the Jewish History and Culture Museum of Belarus. One of them is Mikhail Izrailsky (Belen’ky). Having come to the “Mogilev Ghetto” exhibition opening in 2002 he fell in love with the museum and the work done there, and his heart is still in it.
